The Great Depression is the classic example of what happens to a free market economy when government genuises think they can make better decisions than millions of free consumers. What started out as a normal market correction was followed by government interferance in the form of price fixing, output caps, increased taxes, rampant government spending, huge protective tariffs, and government meddling in areas that should have been left to free enterprise (power and lighting, among others), which effectively prolonged a recession, spawned a depression, then created an even bigger "depressions within a depression."

Franklin Delanore Roosevelt (FDR) (Democrat) became famous for his "fireside chats." His smooth voice and fatherly reassurrances calmed a nation on the front end while he yanked and pulled on every string available to government on the back end. The President that preceded him, Hebert Hoover (Republican), was not much better. Between their two administrations, the U.S. government began to meddle in American affairs more so than at any other time since the Civil War.

IRS

At first, the government experimented with different manipulations, looking for the right combination to "fix" things, all the while being sure to appear as if they were "doing" things on behalf of Americans. Then, they began prosecuting all kinds of scapegoats to take the American people's minds off the fact that all the changes weren't working and to place the blame elsewhere. This persecution was against former Treasury secretaries in the previous administrations, small business owners who were accused of violating some brand new, super-complicated tax rule, large industries that were operating exactly how they always had but somehow were suddenly being called illegal, and stock traders and investors. The sensational news stories about the government cracking down on the people that had "caused all of this" kept their minds distracted from the real culprits. It was an era in American history that mirrored Caesar's "bread and circuses" program in which he pacified and distracted the mobs in Rome with free grain and gladitorial games.

Let me be as clear as I can be: more government is not the answer. It never has been, and never will be.

It has been tried.

It has failed.

Every time.

Why must we repeat it again?

Why must we dive into the same terrible spiral of suffering and blame and flagging economics and loss of freedoms and encroaching bureaucracies, only to discover that they still don't work?

FDR called his escapade of government manipulation the "New Deal." It is safe to say that much of the New Deal was an extremely Raw Deal. Now we are entering into an era where people seem to count more and more on the government for "answers" and "fixes" to problems that it created in the first place! Only what do you call it after the New Deal is found not to work? Do you call it an Even Newer Deal? Or the This-Time-It-Will-Be-Better New Deal?

Let's keep it simple folks: More government = Wrong Answer!

I also posed this exact conversation to another “buddy”, who was too smart for high school, so he ran away later to get his GED. He’s one of those Unibomber types. Smart but hates the organized formality of the world.
    I said…
“More government has never worked throughout history. Do the research. You’re smart enough to read the evidence for yourself.”
    He said….
“Wright brothers + Evidence of what doesn’t work = ?”
    I said….
Nothing…and again switched topics to the Pistons and the Allen Iverson trade. Apparently he thinks someone is going to get the “More Govt” thing right. He’s hoping for the “this-time-it-will-be-better new deal.” He also claimed FDR was a Democrat AND a good president.
So if you’ve seen me walking around in a did-i-take-my-stupid-pills-today state in Oct and Nov, please forgive me.

I had a “chat” with a “buddy” (valedictorian of our senior class) and posed this exact argument, although not so eloquently.
    He said….
“Big government or not, Barack Obama will be the smartest guy in the room. That’s the variable…intelligence. We need intelligence in office.”
    I said….
“Hitler was also the smartest guy in the room.”
    He said….
    “I don’t understand your comparison.”
    I said….
Nothing. I could plainly see the conversation was going nowhere. I switched topics to the Pistons and the Allen Iverson trade.

And going to the extreme, even more government would look like the Orwellian view in 1984. Who wants that? If it happens slow enough, maybe no one that’s not in power will notice. It will be like boiling the frog.(bad attempt at humor)
As to the New Deal and that, the last time I looked at that was highschool, or maybe one of my 8am classes in college :). But from what I remember it did work for a couple of years at the cost of the long term. Then again, when have Americans cared about the long-term when they can have it NOW. Delayed gratification verses instant gratification and instant gratification wins out most of the time. Some people need a paradigm shift. Alas, I do not think that it will happen any time soon. Then again, we could use the each one reach one philosophy to accomplish just that :).

Not sure if this will give you any warm fuzzies in your heart or remind you that it took a Ford to get a Carter to get a Reagan, but I listened to Obama give a speech the other day. This is the guy who is bringing change to Washington and who said numerous times that a vote for McCain is a vote for another Bush term. He said that the first five things he was doing as President of the United States was lower taxes, send out rebate checks, increase government spending, start a new bailout package for distressed companies, and continue the war in Iraq. Just imagine, we are just 8 days out from a third Bush term with one exception: this new guy REALLY knows how to spend more money.

    Chris:
But it’s all so big and complicated, I don’t think I can do it. And these corporations are so big, I can’t influence them.
Besides, it may be a big problem now, but it’s causing so much pain and trouble as is. If we do anything to rock the boat, there will be more pain and trouble, so let’s just sit still. If the government does anything wrong, it will be their fault, and we can elect new people to fix it later on.
Besides, I’ve only got a few more years left to work and I just want to retire in peace.
Besides, I’ve got another 35 years to go and the stock market will recover by then. Things will get better and I won’t have to worry about Social Security.
Besides, I’ll be dead by then, so who cares?
Besides, the US is the largest economy in the world, and a little inflation here and there is probably good for us.
Besides, they just have to put up some more tariffs and import taxes to stop those foreigners from stealing our jobs.
Besides, all they have to do is cut government spending and it would be fine.
Besides, I’m sure I’ll win the lottery and I’ll be all set. I’ll help out a couple of people then.
Besides, I have to do my taxes and I’m going to owe the IRS a bunch of money, so I’m doing everything I can just to stay afloat.
Besides, those opinion folks on cable TV said that bailout package would save millions of jobs, and if they do that, things will be OK.
Besides, with all those bailout packages and increased taxes, I won’t have enough money left to do anything anyways, so what’s the use?
Besides, it’s all those lobbyists and big corporations who are paying everyone off and we can’t beat them.
Besides, the Superbowl is coming up, and I won $250 in the betting pool last year at work. I’ll probably win again this year and I’ll use that money to pay down some of my credit card debt.
Besides, the schools give out a lot of scholarships, so my kids can get those to go to college.
Besides, most kids getting out of college don’t get a job in their area of study, so it doesn’t matter if they go to school or not.
Besides, my kids are pretty smart, so they’ll figure it out.
Besides, I’m just about broke and going down the tubes. I just don’t care about this whole thing.
Besides, they laid off so many people at work, they really need me now. I’m working more hours, but at least I’ve got a job.
Besides, I’m pretty rational and a real smart guy. I’ve got this all figured out. I’ll get by.
Well, I’m exhausted from thinking through all of this (and very, very confused and depressed! Could someone please just shoot me?).
Besides, I gotta run. The semi-finals in my league start tonight. Can’t let the guys down, now can I?!?!?

    Chris,
Thank you for your insightful comments. I never knew much about the sources and causes of the Depression before this. I only knew what they said in school, and they totally ignored the government’s role in it. Of course they would! Public schools don’t want to bite the governmental hands that feed them, after all . . .
    You said,
“Why must we repeat it again?
Why must we dive into the same terrible spiral of suffering and blame and flagging economics and loss of freedoms and encroaching bureaucracies, only to discover that they still don’t work?”
These questions go to the heart of all you said. And the only answer I can give to them is something I’ve heard you say and read here on your blog, “Lesson repeated until lesson learned.” That it happens on a personal level is sometimes tragic. That it happens on a societal level can be catastrophic, even as you have so aptly outlined here.
It will only be when a majority of our population knows the truths about what you’ve said here that these spirals of governmental interference will stop. It is only when enough of us know enough to say, “Enough!” that enough truly will be enough. On some of the Policy Council’s latest CD’s, you folks say a million people is a start. For this job, it isn’t even that.

I think that this time, instead of calling it the “New Deal”, it’s a “New World Order” that we’re being miss-led into.
