Carl Sandburg said, "Nothing happens unless first a dream."  A dream is the root of vision.  A leader has a concept of a better future, situation, or outcome, and dreams of the day when it becomes reality.  The vision of the dream creates a tension on today, and that tension produces the hunger that drives a leader onward.Dreams_2

The concept of dreaming is imperative, and it is actually an exercise in discipline.  It is quite easy to slip into complacency and lose track of the dream we are chasing.  "Oh, I can work toward that tomorrow," or "I don't really need to accomplish that, I guess, it was just a crazy dream," or "I don't know what I was thinking, it all looks so unrealistic to me now."  These and many other phrases I have heard from people who were once infused with a dream only to have it fade with either the passing of time or when facing delays or challenges.  Or maybe the 'pressure' of the chase was too great for them.  There is a kind of tension around a leader's vision, a healthy anxiety deep down that says, "We aren't finished yet.  Remember the dream?  Remember the vision?  We should be doing something about it!"  Oh, those irritating inner voices!  Just like a child, they seem never to forget a promise or goal!  Losing one's grip on a dream, I suspect, is quite natural.  For all the people out there, only a small percentage really engage in the chase of a dream.  Of those, a still smaller percentage muster the courage to persevere no matter what.  To hang tough to the vision requires courage and mental toughness.  It also requires one to stay in close contact with their dream.

How is this done?  By refreshing the dream in our minds on a regular basis.  What was it that you saw when you first got that hint of 'what could be?'  What did you want to accomplish?  Whom did you want to help?  What rewards inspired your soul?  What made you 'come alive' in the first place? Answer these questions, and then get around that original source of inspiration on a regular basis to keep it fresh.  Refresh your dreams, and do it often.  Stoke the flames that ignite the hunger deep inside.  Then, look out world, because not only is it true that "Nothing happens unless first a dream," but it is also true that "nothing can stop a leader with a dream!"

    Chris:
Thanks for the beautiful and refreshing thought this morning. I needed that reminder, the reminder to keep asking and searching deep down. It’s irritating, to say the least, to know that I am not where I am supposed to be. But it is good to know that this is part of the process, that others have gone through it, and that it is all part of the journey. I truly appreciate the time and effort you and Terri, Orrin and Lauire, and all the leaders put in, especially during these times of great change.
I read my Bible first in the morning, then Orrin’s and your web sites. What a great way to start the day! Owen Derry

    Good Morning Chris,
Firstly, Thank you for your perseverance in chasing your dreams which in turn has helped so many others become better people and has affected so many lives. Thank you
Secondly, referring to chasing a dream… is a dream something that you figure out over night or is it a process to create? For myself I have been finding that the more I am learning and growing the clearer of a vision I am starting to get. I have been struggling with this since I joined TEAM (ie getting a clear vision/dream). Only now (almost a year later) are things getting clarified.
Up until now I have just been focusing on learning more and becoming better but there was no vision or dream of really taking it farther outside of my circle. Now it is starting to expand.
So, having been there and done that… is this a normal process? Do dreams happen over night or do they grow as you do?
Thank you again for your true leadership,
    Yoli

Every morning when I get to work I read your blog, and then Orrin’s. You are a constant reminder of the dream and vision of my life. To change the heartbeat of a nation and the direction of the world! I know that I will serve a small but vital part in the realization of that dream and your words are an ever present encouragement and reminder of what I am here to do. Thank you. Then I have my job… which constantly reminds me that I am yet to be a free man. I know that by keeping my dream in front of me… someday I will be a free man and it will be the TEAM Leadership that I will have to thank for it.
    With Love and Encouragement,

Thanks for being an ongoing reader of this site! I hope it is helpful to you.
You are right about it being frustrating to not be where you want to be, and where you know you can be. But that frustration is the tension that produces the hunger that propells a leader. Turn it into constructive energy to pursue your dream. I know you will, and I wish you all the success you are prepared to earn!
God bless you on your journey!

To answer your question, I have had dreams hit me both ways. Some dreams, such as writing books, have been with me since I was a little boy. Others have crept in slowly and unnoticed at first. It helps to be searching, praying, and seeking after a cause that warms your heart and brings you alive. Dreams are almost always laced to causes; at least the best ones are. But I believe that over time you will experience some dreams that come on suddenly and others that grow with your wisdom and understanding. Just remain open to being utilized for something great, and pursue whole-heartily where God leads you!
    God bless.

Thank you for your warm words of encouragement! It means a lot. Almost everything I am presenting here on this blog is material I have learned that has helped me. It is great to have the privelege to pass it along and get feedback that it is helping others, too.
Remember, one person can and does make a difference in the world. Be that difference maker! The world needs you!

Before reading “A Month in Italy” I had high expectations of my week in Maine with my whole family. My husband, three grown kids, two spouses and four grandchildren (from 3 months to 3 years old!)piled onto a plane to Boston, then into a 15 passenger van for visits around Boston, then a long drive to Maine for 6 days before the drive back to Boston. Thank God I read your book first! It really helped keep things in perspective for me about keeping positive and celebrating the little things! Too bad I was the only one who had read it! LOL! You can be sure they will all get a copy before the next family vacation! Thanks for all you do!

This has been made known over and over again, in my life. Even this past weekend, visiting the parade of homes, how powerful, and that’s a material dream. I can only imagine when my purposeful dream is revealed.
I love to dream of a bright world with a circle of friends that uplift me, and also see me as a source of strength. Where trust is 100%, without doubt, where Everything is freely offered, and welcomed in a home, like a refrigerator, or pantry of snacks. Where I know my friends Scottie soda, and I always keep a fresh pack cold just incase they stop by.

Great reminder Chris to get close to the fire to light up the dreams that motivate us to consistently drive through the obstacles! Surrounding ourselves with a community of like minds keeps a healthy tension on ourselves to go beyond comfort! Thanks my friend!Jim
