Jugen Throughout history, one of the key ingredients in waging an unjust war is the tight-fisted control of information to those whose support the tyrant was required to retain.  In order to wage an unjust war, and to make one’s actions appear not only acceptable but justifiable, the tyrannical force needs to lay a continuing foundation of false beliefs upon which to operate.

Perhaps the most dramatic example of this is what occurred under the Third Reich in Germany during World War II.  Adolph Hitler is famous for "the Big Lie" theory, which basically involves telling a lie so enormous that nobody would ever believe you would risk making up something so preposterous.

The Nazi propaganda machine followed the strategy of mis-information to a tee.  First of all, it needed a scapegoat.  For this, they found the Jews.  Secondly, they needed an event.  For this, they had the Treaty of Versailles, which they famously thought was unfair and laid a harsh burden upon Germany for starting World War I (which it did, and which they did)!

Armed with a focal point and a scapegoat, the Nazi propaganda machine spun into high gear, attempting to "spin" the story to fit its desired ends.  In doing so, the Nazis certainly satisfied the "Big Lie" theory, acting like they were only doing what was justified when in fact they were doing what was unimaginable.

It all began with economics.  First, the Nazis blamed their financial woes on the Jews.  Instead of having to face the fact that they had started a World War, and were caught up in a depression that had not only engulfed Germany, but the entire world, the Nazis instead found it convenient to blame the Jews.  Instead of facing their own responsibility for the mess they were in and working on solutions, they found someone to blame.

Next the Nazis built up the concept of "protection" from their enemies.  They understoGerman_friendod the power of fear in making people take leave of their common sense, and they played upon it shamelessly.  After all, it is not easy to entice an entire civilization to butcher another (or to at least turn its head while it is happening), so to accomplish this, they needed to strike fear in the heart of the average German citizen.  This was accomplished by talking about the power of Germany’s enemies, and the need to "protect" the people from these terrible enemies.  After all, hadn’t Germany’s enemies devastated the businesses of a number of German citizens?  Hadn’t the enemies of Germany jeopardized the livelihoods of thousands of German people?  The Nazi party had gone to war because it had to, in order to protect the interests of innocent German citizens everywhere.  Wasn’t the economic decline felt by Germany the fault of someone else?

Further, the Nazi propaganda machine was designed to build morale, even when the Nazi cause was failing miserably, when the world was finding out about its shady, hidden operations, and when its armies were being crushed in the field.  The way this was done was by very craftily telling the German people over and over again that the Nazis were winning.  No matter what happened in the court of world opinion, the Nazi government would tell its trapped citizens that it was winning, and that anything that didn’t appear to be a victory was either lies from its enemies, rumors, reverse-propaganda, or the like.  As long as the Nazi government could "spin" events into appearing to be victories, it thought it could keep its people fooled.

This whole strategy worked very well for a time.  But a house of cards cannot stand forever.  As the Allied armies pushed further into the German interior, and as the losses became more and more substantial, and as the failed ideology of blaming a nation’s entire host of problems on a small group of people began to play itself out, the world was finally allowed a glance into a horror it could not have conceived.  As the truth became known, it was so despicable, so terrible, so horrifying, that one wonders how monstors like Joseph Goebbels (one of Germany’s head propagandists), could sleep at night.  The lies, the mistreatment of an innocent people, the butchery, are a stain on Germany’s (and mankind’s) history that will never be erased or forgotten.  Hitler_propaganda

Goebbels and Hitler and the Nazis are all dead and gone.  But the legacy of their lies remain.  And that becomes a lesson for any leader:

Lies outlive spin.

And as the Bible says, be sure that the truth will find you out.

Leaders everywhere can learn a valuable lesson from this negative example.  Leaders deal in truth, honesty, integrity, character, and what author Jim Collins calls "confronting brutal reality."  Anything less than this is not leadership.  And if it’s not leadership, it’s not worthy to be followed.

Hey Chris, I dont’ know how else to try to make contact with you but I want to tell you that there was just a bill passed in Cal. that would make homeschooling illegal. Chris I’m fearful of what our country is coming to. I dont’ know what I can do. I know that it doesn’t mean much for michigan but when someone can say that a school will teach the so called “benefits” of the homosexual community, and also make all locker-rooms unisexed, then have the gall to tell me that my children has to attend that school. That just does not sould like a free country to me. My child isn’t born yet, what will It be like when they grow older. With tears in my eye’s I’m begging for a voice to help me bring back the freedom.

It is appropriate that you post this on my article about Nazis. This is exactly what the Nazis did, if you remember, they indocrtrinated the youth with their Nazi Youth program. Take the children away from the parents, take over their education, and get them socially programmed. That is what motivates so many home schoolers: the desire to keep their children from getting force-fed liberal socialism in their schools.
I think anyone who treasures freedom is in shock at the word coming out of California right now. I am still investigating to determine exactly what was ruled and if it can last. I think it is safe to say that ANYONE who values personal freedom should fight on this issue, whether interested in “home schooling” itself, or not. NO GOVERNMENT should be able to tell us how to educate our children or what is best for them. We should be signing petitions, contacting Congressmen and Senators, writing letters, and whatever we can think of. Freedom must be defended. Pray for God’s hand in California and a turn of the tide in a government that thinks it owns our children and can trample our freedom. Judicial activism must stop.

    Chris:
What a profound post. During my undergraduate days I was so bored with history (memorizing events & dates) and did not fully appreciate its relevancy. Today, I am enjoying your historical examples of great leaders. However, I am shocked to see certain critical historical events being repeated. Your post on “Nazi Propaganda” was very enlightening. Thank you.
Relative to the California home school dilemma, my three daughters are home schooling their children very effectively and this issue concerns me also. In looking back over my 69 years I see so many dramatic changes in our culture, many of which I consider to be very negative. On a daily basis there was not much to be concerned about – a little change here and a little change there. However, since my days as a young adult, things are very different. I feel strongly that if we do not deal with the little, daily indiscretions, encroachments on our freedoms, leadership voids, etc., our grandchildren will never know what it is like to live free. It all begins with leadership. I look forward to being part of a team of 1 million true leaders. It’s time.
We are so thankful for you Chuck and Orrin for providing such powerful leadership and for “Leading a Leadership Revolution”. We pray for you daily.

Bradyman, as you know, Tracie and I are homeschooling our soon to be five children. Well, we are homeschooling three right now, our three year old and unborn child I have tried to teach the many laws of physics, but they haven’t caught on just yet. The two main reasons we are homeschooling are with the two oldest children. My son, Brenden, has/had a disorder called reading apraxia in which (laymen’s terms) the part of the brain that controls reading is simply underpowered, kind of like trying to start a car with a nine volt battery. Our school systems solution was to not teach him how to read because it will be too difficult and besides there are other ways for kids to learn. We said “hogwash” (well, sort of, but the words I actually used I won’t print here, remember, this was before I became a Christian)! The school systems first proposal was to give up and surrender without a fight. He is now nine and reads almost at grade level now. Not bad for a kid who the schools said would grow up to be illiterate. When I was thinking of putting my daughter in public school, there was a controversy in our area of teaching about intercourse in second grade! And, if that weren’t bad enough, they were speaking of only teaching anal, oral, and homosexual intercourse. They eventually ruled against it, but I wasn’t taking the chance. I do not want my 2nd grade daughter to learn that stuff. So we chose to homeschool our own children after that point–all of them! Now the court system of California is saying that homeschooling is illegal? As you can imagine, I am quite emotional about this subject, even if it is not in my homestate. If you think this is bad, look into what they are teaching about communism in California schools nowadays. Quite upsetting. I think it is high time to look at the “Circle of Body Politic” and throw in some “Great Spiritual Truth”, because we need more courage in this country to fight for what’s right.

An EXCELLENT point … for even more details on the consequences of this catastrophic Treaty, do have a look at my wonderful new book, “A Shattered Peace: Versailles 1919 and the Price We Pay Today” [www.ashatteredpeace.com] just published by Wiley and available at Amazon.com and most bookstores !

Well done choosing the Nazi propaganda machine as your example. In my studies, only the Soviet propaganda from the Cold War could compare to what Hitler’s group did. Obviously, propaganda is as old as lying, but it seems to have reached new heights during the twentieth century. The Third Reich was so successful with it because 1) they were very organized and systematic 2) they literally barraged all means of communication with their message 3) they targeted all types of audiences, but particularly the young and impressionable (always where you want to focus if fostering unrest) 4) they eliminated all other forms of “outside” communication from getting in. My sociology teacher in college always used the Nazis as the prime example of (sadly) successful propaganda because of the sheer magnitude of what they were covering up. If leadership is about truth, then uncovering propaganda will be part of the leaders responsibilities. Excellent article.

You can see a lot of propaganda being spewed through American airways today. I’m glad you brought up this point about the Nazi’s, but I would’ve liked to have seen you draw comparisons to what we see in America today. Trust me, there is plenty of it too. Fox News comes to mind.

wow. great article. he who controls the lies controls the world??? so true
amazingly, despite how many feel about the current government in some countries, political leaders continue to lie to the people and blame others for the problems facing their countries.
without pointing fingers, one simply needs to look at governmental responses to recent tragic events to see that lies are being told again and again. why to you suppose now that every evil deed in the worls is “linked to al quida?”
why do you suppose that an ethical leader would chose to lie to te public unless there was personal gain involved? why would a government continue to create more laws to control (protect??) the people? if those aren’t important enough questions, why would the opposition not try to rectify these problems rather than fight amoungst themselves?
we need true leaders now more than ever before. we need a return to ethics, morals, and courage.
i thank God that i have been fortunate enough to have been exposed to the wisdom and teachings of Orrin and Chris.
i once had the pleasure to meet and speak with Bob McEwen and his wife Liz. after listening to his views i think we should urge our TEAM leaders to begin to think about the political arenas even though it would take some of their time away from their families.
the time is here for leaders such as ours.
GOD Bless our leadership. i contniue to pray for you and thank you all

Chris, your post on the Nazi’s “Big Lie” reminded me of the final scene from the movie, “Judgement at Nuremburg” about the Nazi war crimes trial. A “good” man and German Judge who hated Hitler but was caught up in the “lie,” asked to see the American Judge who presided over the trial. Both men had respect for each other. From his jail cell, the German Judge pleaded with the American Judge to understand that, “I didn’t know it would come to this.” (Six million Jews slaughtered). Looking for a sympathetic response, he heard the American Judge say, “It came to that the first time you sentenced an innocent man to die.”
This so reminds me of the “Big lie” of abortion. We were told in 1973 through Roe vs. Wade, that abortion would be RARE and primarily to save the life of the mother. Our nation has embraced the big lie and the legacy of it has been the slaughter of 50 million innocents.
Thank God for the values of the people on the TEAM. Together, we can stop this madness. And we will!
    God bless,

I read your Nazi propaganda with interest. But I disagree with one thing. You stated that the Allies didn’t know a thing about what the Nazis were doing until they marched into Germany. That is not true. The Catholic church knew what was going on and turned their backs. Other countries knew too, the Americans, the British and so on. They have to take some responsibility in not doing what they could have to help those who came to them for help.

Thanks for your comments. However, please re-read the article. I never said the Allies didn’t know a thing, I simply related that the world eventually found out. You are absolutely right, though, nothing like this could have happened if thousands of people had not turned their backs on what was going on. As I’ve quoted Edmund Burke elsewhere on this blog, “The only way for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.”

    Thanks Chris!
I’m an educator in Wisconsin, and for year we told ourselves that we were awesome, and that the Wisconsin education system was some of the best in the country. Which was true, when you look at the data from a certain perspective. Now with current trends in education, especially in a global economy, we are looking at “confronting brutal realities” and are being met with some resistance from our more seasoned veterans. They had been told for most of their career that they were some of the best in the world, and they now that may not be the case.
Luckily,we have access to resource like the LIFE leaders and people like Oliver DeMille to help us reform American education into something big
