Goal setting is something everyone has heard of and very few actually do.  Of those of us that practice it, or try to, on a regular basis, many of us fall into some traps along the way.  But goal setting done properly can invigorate you and produce incredible results. Don’t be like the average person out there who isn’t striving for anything, who lets life simply parade on by, who doesn’t exercise his or her gifts to the fullest exertion, and realizes toward the end of his or her life that most of it has passed by.  Goal setting is a way to keep positive pressure on one’s self.  It is a way to make sure we are living while we are alive.  And it is actually quite fun, believe it or not!

Here are some guidelines to proper goal setting:

1. Goals should be realistic but challenging: a goal should be something that you actually believe you can accomplish, but at the same time, it should put a little fear into you that it will require significant effort on your part to accomplish.

2. Goals should be specific: be specific when setting your goals.  General goals have no power to inspire.  Specific goals leave you no place to hide.

3. Goals should be written down and displayed where you can’t forget about them: a goal not written down is simply a wish.  Once written, however, a goal becomes "official" and remains on display to keep you in the game.

4. Goals should be measurable: There is no sense in setting a goal if you have no concrete way of measuring your progress toward that goal.  Make sure they are measurable, and check your progress regularly.

5. Goals should be in line with your overall purpose:  One of the biggest challenges in life is not succeeding, but succeeding at something that really matters!  Don’t get sucked into setting goals for accomplishment in areas that are not your heart’s desire.  You only have one life, God built you for a specific purpose, figure out that purpose and pursue it with all you’ve got!  THEN set goals in that area!  Remember, only do what only you were built to do.  Leave everyone else’s agenda to them!

6. Goals should stand alone: What I mean by this is that some people set too many goals.  They set goals in different areas, at different levels, and before very long at all, they are confused by them all.  This is not the way to set goals.  The secret of success is to focus.  One dominant, overriding goal will produce creativity and action.  So keep it simple and singular.

7. Goals should be short-term enough to put pressure on you today: A "someday" goal will not work, and is nothing more than a fantasy.  A goal must put you in positive tension today, or it is not functioning properly.  If you have set your goal out there far enough that you think, "Well, I can get started on that tomorrow and still have time to accomplish it," then you’ve set it too far out on the calendar.

8.  Goals should have a specific date of accomplishment: This goes with number 7 above.  Make sure you have a finish line marked on your calendar.

There is much more to goal setting, but for me, these are the high points.  Follow these, and you’ll be on your way to achievement and significance.  Neglect this technique, and you’ll waste days, if not years, that you’ll never get back.

What is your overriding goal right now?  If you don’t have one, set it quickly and get after it.  The clock is ticking!

Today being the anniversary of D-Day, and yesterday being the anniversary of the death of one of the greatest presidents of all time (Ronald Reagan), these two days of rememberance are perfect examples of what can be accomplished with proper goal setting.
D-Day didn’t happen by chance, and we didn’t win it by luck, but by calculated and planned goals involving unbelievable numbers of people.
Similarly, Ronald Reagan didn’t smite communism by chance. He knew he had a purpose in life, and he lived every day with that in mind, knowing exactly what he wanted to accomplish. His simple motto for the Cold War was “We win, they lose”.
Great things happen when great people set goals and stick to them. Our “greatest generation” defeated the gravest threat to the freedom of the world when they won WWII, and one of our greatest presidents defeated the gravest threat to individual freedom when he brought down Communism as an acceptable form of government.

“Remember, only do what only you were built to do. Leave everyone else’s agenda to them!”
Wow, what a great principle to be reminded of. When I first plugged into the Team training system some years ago this was the second lesson that really ministered to me. (The first was Define, Learn, Do.)
By taking this to heart it has allowed me to give my self permission to say no to GOOD things that are not part of God’s plan for me. Often times, because of the personality that God gave me, I have said yes to projects and tasks because I simply wanted to serve the people asking me but in the end I ended up so distracted I never accomplished anything toward what God has for me. I was like the proverbial dog trying to chase two rabbits.
Thank you for reminding us of this special principle. My Pastor and a man I consider to be a great leader, Greg Stewart, has often tried to nudge us as a congregation to be purposeful about our lives and our ministry. He teaches us to adjust our calendars to fit the areas of life that God would have us spend time on and demonstrate through how we spend our time that we care about things like developing our relationship with God through prayer, serving others through what he calls proactive love, and personal development through reading Scripture and other books.
When applying the principles you discuss in this post, I can see where consistent and measurable goals in each of these areas (and others) will help me stretch and grow in ways that I am not now simply because I am either setting goals that are so far out there that they seem too big and I don’t work for them or so generic that I never know if I am making progress.
This is really practical stuff that I already knew but needed reminded of. Thanks.

    Chris:
You know, I am so good at this at work, and have a team of people that I have to guide to set their goals and do the plan do adjust with. We have some major goals to hit this year.
I am not always the best at setting goals in this business. I seem to really be best at this after a major.
You have been doing this along time. Any feedback from your experience ( and give it to me straight ) why my job goals are so strategically set and followed, and why I need the push and constant reminders in this business?

“We had one person who walked out of an interview straight into a glass door. The glass shattered.”

I came across this quote today, and while it doesn’t apply to this particular posting on your blog, I thought of you and the “Left Lane is for passing” quote you share often with us — I think you’ll appreciate this quote on Patience! ๐Ÿ™‚
Have a great day and hope to see you in Columbus this weekend.

Great article and very helpful. You have clearly defined the proper way of setting goal setting. Setting your goals regularly will let you see where you are and how far you are from achieving your dreams be it long term.
