An often overlooked leadership skill is the ability to play on a team.  Cooperation, teamwork, and unity sound easy enough, but there are people that struggle mightily with these concepts.  They can’t seem to get along for long with groups of people in a productive way.  These people end up complaining about their teammates, getting frustrated, leaving the group, or some combination of all of these.  Then later, in a new situation, they begin the cycle again!

Real leaders are good at getting along with people.  Period.  This means that they can function productively in a group environment where their ideas may not only not get implemented, but sometimes won’t even be heard.  That’s okay for the mature leader, however, because the mature leader knows that there is power in a group working together to find the best answer that works for the largest number of them, and then becomes something they can all do in unison.  The power of shared goals and combined effort is hard to describe.

I have had the privilege of working on some excellent teams.  First and foremost in that experience has been my time in with the LIFE Leadership company.  We have had so many great master-mind sessions, massive changes to be made and reacted to, “jam sessions,” and just overall good team play that I feel blessed to have played a part.  What great synergy.  Seeing leaders like Orrin Woodward and Tim Marks in motion in a group dynamic is truly a great experience!

Leaders learn to foster collaboration.  They learn to succumb some of their wishes to the good of the team.  They learn to search for common ground and win-win scenarios, and they are selfless and respectful as the team dynamic ebbs and flows.  Sometimes they play a prominent role, other times their role is more passive but just as important!  Learn to foster this set of skillsets as you grow as a leader.  Become a teammate others can count on.  Contribute, share, and be an enthusiastic and engaged partner, but don’t dominate or sulk.  Find out the uniqueness you bring to the table and contribute it!  See if you can harmoniously add to the overall output so that the team is better because of your participation.  When things go a little awry; take the blame and accept responsibility.  When things go really well; give credit away.  This all sounds so easy!  But let me assure you that it is rare.  So strive to be a great teammate and let your leadership grow in a collaborative way.

I dare you.

I love this post. Team play is so very important in any endeavor we undertake.
When one can do all the things you describe above of a leader, the team is so much stronger, which leads to such great results.
I am a firm believer in a team. We have a great team where I work, and I am blessed to have a family of 8 children (7 now) who truly pull together as one when things get tough.
Of course there is the TEAM, which is so powerful, and of which I feel very blessed to also be part of.
Thanks Chris for reminding us just how great it is to be part of a team and work together.

    Hey Chris,
You don’t have to post this on the blog, nor does it have anything to do with the blog. I just wanted to thank you for the great teaching tonight in Southfield. Also, thanks a million for having a little good spirited fun down Southfield rd with my slow Mustang GT. That quite possibly was the highlight of my day. I have had a goal set for quite sometime to be able to drive it this summer and my wife wanted to give me a little motivation and insured it for a week for my birthday. I was crusin all day long looking for a race :0).Thanks again, and by the way your car sounds great wide open.

Thanks! It was fun jousting with you! You wouldn’t believe it, but on the way home up I75 someone else challenged me! Just in case I was imagining things, I asked the couple in my car with me if I was interpreting his strange driving behavior correctly, and they verified that I was! You’ll be happy to hear that we took him!
Anyway, be safe. Thanks for the fun. (And just so everybody knows, no speed limits were exceeded, I don’t think. I’m serious).

speaking of driving the” speed limit” tim marks (the week before) in southfield took the curves leaving the parking lot very very well, me and a new person gave him the universal sign for “spin the tires” and all we saw was Amy getting tossed around on the curves!!! Sorry Amy…but it was cool! the car part not the tossing Amy around part.

    Hey Chris,
Great Blog! It is definately all about team work in TEAM. For there is no I in team, but a group of people driving for a common dream / goal.
I also have to agree with Owen on how awesome your mini seminar was @ the Southfield Open. The best I’ve heard of yours yet. I would imagine that it would be put on CD, right?
I would be the one that hollered when you mentioned that you would video someone taking their first shot off the tee @ St. Andrews.
Talk to Dean Clouse and let me know what kind of goal I need to hit along the way for us to achieve that. (Total dream building right now).
Well Chris keep fighting the good fight, and getting the job done of helping one million people one person @ a time. I thank you, Teri, Orrin, Laurie, and the PC for all that you’ve done to keep this dream alive.
    God Bless!

    Dear Chris,
I attended the convention in Minnesota recently. Of course, simply outstanding. I do need to express my feelings regarding not having the likes of you and Terri, Tim & Amy, Mark & Tammy Crawford, Claude and Lana Hamilton and a few others. Actually, these are sentiments from several others who were in attendance with me. WE WERE HUGELY DISAPPOINTED! I realize you can’t be everywhere, but, wasn’t there a way to at least have some of you there for even a small portion of the meeting?
The Guzzardo’s and the Harteis’ etc. were as always, top notch. I just went away from this convention with my cup “not as full” as I’ve had it over the past 3 years. I hope this doesn’t offend anyone, it’s not intended to. I just would like to understand. I trust you, the TEAM leadership and MonaVie with my whole heart. Thanks for all you do and have done! Sincerely, Gary S.
