I picked up a newspaper on the plane this weekend.  I wish I hadn't.  After about a half hour with the thing, I was disgusted with how many false presuppositions permeated the articles.  I was predominantly reading the finance pages, and here the assumptions made about economics were astounding.  At one point in a financial book review the writer asked the book author whether Capitalism could still be considered a good system because of all the economic woes in our country these days.  The author's response was something like, "Well, Socialism and Communism haven't been proven to work too well, either."

That's it? That's the defense given by a supposed 'expert' on economics? Where do they find these guys?

Blaming Capitalism for our bad economy is like saying a murder victim is at fault for consuming bullets. The economy would be just fine if someone, namely our over-reaching, meddlesome government, would stop torturing it to the point of near fatality.  Talk about a water board!

Yet, such a ridiculous false presupposition was printed in an otherwise intelligent looking article. Why are so many (and let's just say it like it really is) false ideas allowed as though they are verified truths? Why do wrong assumptions stand as the foundation of arguments that are preposterous to begin with? Why do these (prounounced with nose in the air) intellectuals get away with being so incorrect?

I believe it's because most Americans don't really realize what's being said.  Also, they are too busy trying to survive the bumps and bruises of their own lives to dig into the falsity of people who have nothing more to do than sit around and pontificate wrongly about things they've never actually done.  All this while the "doers" are out doing it.

Our only defense against rampant falsity and its tragic consequences in our land is to make the time to get educated.  A population that knows what's going on, that takes the time to peer behind the curtain at the scared man at the controls who is messing up our nation and trampling on its Constitution , is the only way to guard against the loss of liberty.

I leave you with two of my favorite quotes from Thomas Jefferson:

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

    Chris,
Now you know why I’ve stopped watching the news, reading the newspaper and listening to most radio programs. (I do listen to the radio on my morning commute on a family-friendly station, because the dj’s make me laugh!) It stops the barrage of all that crap.
I started it after the Louisville major, as an experiment. I had been gradually weaning off it prior to that, and decided it was time to go the rest of the way for myself, cold turkey.
Yes, it means I miss stuff. I only learned about the wildfires in Austrailia, for example, in an email prayer bulletin I get daily. And that was over 10 days after it had broken in the news.
I get my weather online. The U.S. National Weather Service has a nice site, and all the local offices have links on it, so I can get to mine (or one anywhere I am going) and get an accurate and reliable forecast whenever I need one.
If I need to know something else, I figure someone will eventually tell me somehow. My mother is a frequent source, though not the only one. I just don’t need the negative barrage for myself.
I listen to Team CD’s. I read Team books, and biographies and autobiographies of successful people. (I’m reading about Andrew Jackson’s White House years at the moment, in my spare time.) I educate myself in concepts like what you discuss on this blog. I watch uplifting DVD’s. I spend time with my husband, my kids, my granddaughter, our friends, our mentors, our team mates and people with whom we are sharing the juice.
And you know, despite being thought of as crazy for doing it by those who know about it (like my daughter and mother) I don’t miss the negative media a single bit . . .

Thank you for taking the time and coming out to see us in Utah i hope you were able to still have a good valentines. The quickest way for our country to become a socialist country is for good men and women to do nothing. As for us in I feel most people are still in a little bubble that may or may not be popped. The economy has not hit them as hard here. That is not an excuse for the lack of performance that i am sure you have see here. I want you to know that i will be there on the front lines to fight. I will be seeing you as a round table and beyond. I know that through prayer and faith anything is possible.
    thank you

Chris, you are right on the mark with this post. People are numbdefied by what the media say’s and what the real truth is. Here’s a link to a video that show’s what government spending has been doing to the economy since 1947 to now. I hope this link works because it is a real eye opener.http://www.resistnet.com/video/the-stimulus-skyrocket

    Well said Chris.
You and Orrin have also talked about these attitudes often in your writings and presentations.
I believe there are several realities associated with these attitudes and sometimes “pontifications” that lead us to the situation where we find ourselves in the United States today.
    1. It is well documented that “we become like those with whom we associate and interact.” We see it in the attitudes and language of any group of workers, professionals, educators, and even golf buddies. It doesn’t take long before we find ourselves with similar language, attitudes, and sometimes even mannerisms of those with whom we have regular and consistant involvement.
    2. Follow the money and/or the votes in today’s culture and match this against the large numbers of people who feel trapped and feel the only way out of their dilemma is to have politicians “with money at their fingertips” come along and hold out the “hope” of a better future with these “magic resources.”
    3. The authors of Tribal Leadership – who base their statements and assumptions on a significant amount of research – address the very thing you talk about in your post. Stage one and two leaders feel trapped by either their own self imposed inferiorities or by what they believe is a system out there that won’t allow them out of their current economic situation or professional limitations. Once people move to stage three leadership it is often accompanied and encouraged by the thinking described in the book by a University of Southern California president: “in a university, it can be very helpful to have people focused on their accomplishments, the individual genius goes a long way.” The authors noted that many professionals at this stage feel that most people around them just don’t measure up to their intellectual level. Since the masses have no hope in their own potentials, arrogance, power, and control take over and we end up with the dilemma we face today.
What is happening within the TEAM leadership development system is the empowerment of large numbers of people who – through the association and training – begin to think for themselves and are empowered to develop the confidence to choose who they listen to on their journey toward their goals and objectives in life.

You said in your blog “A population that knows what’s going on…is the only way to guard against the loss of liberty”. I was wondering, does that include congressmen? We both reside in Michigan, one of us full time. The economy has been bad up here for a while now. Unemployment is in the double digits and the largest sector of employment is almost bankrupt, which is about to make it worse. The housing crisis is among the worst in the country. Mortgage fraud is in the top ten of the fifty states. People are leaving this state like a gaggle of geese in autumn. Income taxes are among the highest of the states and small business taxes are the highest preventing any companies from coming into or starting in this state. We have some pretty big problems here in Michigan. Today, a congressman decided to put in a bill to force energy drink companies to print how much caffeine is in each can. So, when you wrote “A population that knows what’s going on…is the only way to guard against the loss of liberty”, I’m pretty sure you need to send this congressman a copy. He must think the biggest problem in Michigan is that I drink too much Monster not having an idea as to the caffeine content and I would quit drinking it once I knew the levels. I bet GM is happy, now I can take all my money spent on energy drinks and spend it on a new car. Is this congressman clueless or just in denial? Where are the people who will cut taxes to help business people expand therefore hire the unemployed? Where are the congressmen who will cut spending so we have more of our own money? Where are the leaders of the government who know that inflation is caused by them and the banks and is destructive to our economy? I just want to scream at this congressman “I prefer coffee and I love caffeine, but I hate where our economy is headed so try fixing that for a while!”. Where do we go from here?
