The Power of Fun

I believe one weapon in a leader’s arsenal ought to be humor and the ability to laugh. I have seen my team-mate and co-author Orrin Woodward do this on numerous occasions; lighten a tense situation with humor.

The most effective kind of humor is laughing at one’s self. The least effective is sarcasm (unless directed aginst self, of course). There are many types that are in between. Realize that humor can also be dangerous, as in those situations where it puts someone on the spot or makes someone feel uncomfortable. 
 
The key to good humor is a good heart.  Good-hearted cheer and laughter enhances moments and makes for more lasting memories.  In fact, there are few ways of connecting with others more powerful than a good laugh.
 
So lighten up a little bit, and be sure to lighten the load of those around you with a well-placed laugh.

    What better medicine for someone.
    Laughter and fun can turn a mood,
    uplift someone, and bring someone right out of a tense situation.
    What a wonderful post for a Saturday morning.
    We all need laughter and fun.
    I know no one better at this than you.
    I will be driving to work listening to your CD’s, laughing out loud and the people driving next to me think I am crazy.
    Oh well, they don’t know what I know.
    This post made me laugh.

    Chris,
    I was listening yesterday to a CD by John Maxwell, and in it he was talking about ways to win with people. One of the ways he mentioned that relates to this topic was to “Create a Memory and Visit it Often.”
    Dr. Maxwell said that when we are with people, especially those who we are leading, it is important to do special stuff together that is fun. Do it even if it’s inexpensive and silly, to create a memory together that you can all visit later, and then visit it often. He related some stories of some trips with people, and some silly things they did together, and how special those times are now to all of them.
    Here’s an example that just happened today: This morning, my husband and I went to breakfast with my mother. Mom was driving and my husband was in the front seat with her, holding her things. He’d placed some stuff on the dashboard, and it fell when she made a stop. She managed to snag it, and I suggested he take it from her. I was told by both of them his hands were already overful, and if he’d had something soft, he’d have tossed it at me! He specifically mentioned a roll of paper towels, and I said he couldn’t use those, because only I could. He and I got to laughing, and my mother had no clue as to why!
    So, over breakfast, we had to tell Mom about a trip to a major when I was driving and he was supposed to be sleeping. It was stormy and he kept popping his head up to make sure I was okay. I told our sposors who were travelling with us after about the 20th time he did it (in 40 minutes), if he did it again to hit him with the roll of paper towels we kept in the van to clean the windows!! On the way home, I was driving again, and he tried to do it again when the roads were dry and clean, and this time, he did get hit with the towels a few times before he left me alone . . . So any mention of paper towels being used as a weapon in a vehicle just gets us laughing . . .

    Chris, Just finished listening to Your Second Second. That was powerful!! My 3 boys listened to it with me and we were all fired up! Keep up the great teaching and we will Have Fun, Make Money and Make a Difference! thanks, Orrin

    Putting someone else on the spot or having a laugh at someone else’s expense is not only dangerous, it’s de-edifying AND unbiblical. I try and keep this in mind, but surely fail at times.
