The ancient Roman empire had a term for it. They called it “Bread and Circusses.”
Their philosophy was if you give the masses sufficient food to no longer be hungry, and sufficient entertainment to distract them, they will leave any government alone to do with them what it wants. It worked very well for the Roman empire for hundreds of years, until the barbarians came to get in on the deal . . .
Human nature has not changed. Human governments have not changed, either. Only these days, it’s a general dependance, instead of the “feed ’em and distract ’em” Roman view. Doesn’t matter. The same end of slavery will eventually result, IF nothing is done to stop the downward slide.
Thank you, Chris, for being a leader in the voice against the slide. Team Rascals is right behind you . . .

    Chris,
I didn’t know where else to put this comment. Apologies.
You’ll recall in Book VII of “The Republic,” Plato uses the allegory of prisoners chained in a cave to explain what it is like for a person who is blinded to truth to suddenly be freed and see truth, and upon returning, the impossibility of him conveying truth to his colleagues without them seeing it themselves. Here is Plato’s allegory illustrated in part in a wonderful claymation.

    Chris!
I just learned that Peter Schiff is running on the Republican ticket for 2010 U.S. Senator for Connecticut to unseat Chris Dodd.
