The ramrod of government-controlled healthcare is beating hard upon the doors of free enterprise. For some reason, a sufficient number of people have somehow become convinced that the US government can actually run something, anything, efficiently, for this crazy idea of nationalized health care to be gaining traction. But the facts of what such a system would do to our current level of medical care, ease of access, levels of research and advancement, innovation, and even capacity, are scary.

Recently, newsman John Stossel of ABC did a compelling analysis of what nationalized health care would mean. He has since been fired. Many speculate that his release was precipitated by this bit of work he did to dare and suggest that the emperor has no clothes. Watch the clip for yourself.

    Chris:
This is absolutely unacceptable. People will die. I understand that something needs to be done as health cares costs are skyrocketing out of control; however, perhaps some measures need to be put in place to monitor some of the wasteful spending here, and protect the care that everyone needs at the same time.
That is the type of plan we should be moving toward.
This subject hits home with me, as I work in the employee benefits field, and have had parents and siblings who had the best of care. Without it, they would have passed much much earlier.
    Thanks for posting this.

    Hi Chris,
John Stossel only touched on what goes on in the Canadian “Health care” industry…AKA the “Sickness” industry! There are a number of problems, which include, but are not limited to:
1)Abuse! Because we have “free” health care people run to the doctor every time they get a sniffle or stub their toe!
    2) Because we do not have enough doctors (because they are all going to the USA for more $$$ and less STRESS, people who do not have doctors go to the Emergency room. This puts unnecessary stress on the ER resulting in crazy wait times, overcrowding and yes, spreading of more germs to more people!
    3) Because the staff at our hospitals are so overworked and underpaid, a lot of them are on “stress-leave”! So…then they have to hire someone else to do the same job that that person was doing and pay them while they are still paying the stress-leave person!
4)Because the government has closed beds in the hospitals due to lack of funds! We are not sure what this accomplishes because people are still DIEING to get in them!
    5) The government can not distinguish what is “elective” surgery and “necessary” surgery! Of course not, they are not doctors, they are politicians! Although if you need a surgery such as my mother needed, (bone spurs on her spine that resulted in daily high doses of pain killers and having to be in a horizontal position for 3/4 of the day and unable to live as a human being), you have to write a strongly worded letter to your local representative! This is much more effective when they are leading up to an election!
    6) Because people do not cut a cheque for health care, they do not see how much money goes into the system. If we had to cut a cheque, there would be an increase in respect for our system and less abuse! When I worked in that system, it was considered more than OK to take things home at night. Paperclips, markers, pens, staplers, computer paper, and larger supplies would disappear on a daily basis. The workers almost had an attitude of “they owe us”. What they didn’t realize is that they were paying for those things to begin with, they simply didn’t see the money leave their hands.
    7) The Canadian government does not want a two-tired system which would include private hospitals. I guess they feel that they would loose control by allowing private hospitals to open for those that can afford it. The rich can just tough-it-out like the rest of us! They don’t want to free up space for those of us that can’t afford it and can’t afford to wait to be seen!
The Canadian Health Care Industry needs a complete make-over that needs to start with “we the people”. we need to be responsible and respectful of what we have or we are going to loose it!!!Anyone that thinks we are not, better get their head out of the sand.
    Thanks for everything Chris,

    Thanks chris….
I agree that we as a country is moving towards socialism. I was not shocked by the report because I have heard the same type of thing from Fox News Channel. I am however suprised by the firing of John Stossel for reporting the truth. Now I know why I have seen him on Fox News so much. And about a month and a half ago the Detroit Free Press printed a story about a man from Canada who couldn’t wait for a life saving surgery and got it sooner by crossing into the U.S. the should post a sign when entering our country that reads “Welcome To The United Socialist States Of America”. Thanks for keeping us informed on the truth.

    Chris,
It doesn’t shock me at all that John Stossell was fired for this report. He’s been bucking the liberal/socialist powers that be at that network for years. I think he’ll land on his feet at some network (like Fox) who appreciates him . . .
I’m going to get on my soapbox now. For those who don’t like it, I’m sorry. This is a subject close to my heart, and about which I am passionate, for several reasons. One is I work for the contractor that manages a healthcare program for our state. The other is an experience I recently had, when I visited the “Step Into Africa – America Discovers AIDS” experience, sponsored by World Vision and hosted by our church here in the Northeast. After attending this event, I also read “The Hole In The Gospel” by Robert Carlson, president of World Vision. I highly recommend it.
We have approximately 15% of our US population without healthcare. Yet, as one of my friends without it recently discovered, she could show up at a hospital, be admitted and treated for her problem and they HAD to do it because it is the LAW in both NY and the US. No, she didn’t get a long term fix for her problem. But she got seen, and was there for several days doing it.
Contrast what we so cheerfully argue about in the West to what Terri spoke of at the Milwaukee Major: parts of the developing world, where, as you have been reading this, at least 5 people have DIED because of lack of availability of ANY healthcare AT ALL. None for miles and miles. That’s 5 every 3 minutes, folks, every day, all day!
What other joys do they get to deal with?? No clean or safe drinking water. Theirs is full of diseases and/or parasites. Dealing with diseases we’ve basically wiped out here in the West, like tuburculosis, cholera and the like. AIDS, not as a “crisis” like it is here, but so badly decimating the populations, particularly adults in their most productive years, it’s a PANDEMIC. Yeah, that’s right, it’s gone beyond epidemic stage in much of Africa, and is heading that way in parts of the Far East. Oh, and let’s not forget the ever-present tribal and religious warfare, in which children are kidnapped and forced to participate . . .
So, don’t whine to me about a healthcare “crisis” in the West. Yeah, there’s a challenge, and it requires people with guts and strength to fix it. Yes, free enterprise is always the first and best solution.
But tonight, if you are reading this from somewhere in the West, get down on your knees and thank God and count yourself as among the blessed and highly fortunately favored that you live in a place where it can be fixed so easily. That is, unless you WANT to live in the developing world, where it CAN’T . . .

I really appreciate the continuous fight for freedom from you, Chris. There’s a little update; John Stossel is moving from ABC to FOX. It’s not just a firing, but a lateral shift to a different company. It’s interesting to speculate on the stifling of information that ABC likes to do. Hmm. Thanks again for keeping us up to date on the ‘exciting’ things our beloved president is doing.

Chris, there’s a great video on the Canadian “health care” industry. An American commentator from PJTV.com (great site by the way) flew to Canada and stayed with a few friends. It’s downright scary…

And on the topic of liberty, I don’t presume to suggest where “all 3 of us” who read your blog spend our money, and I don’t have much myself until we pay off our stupid debts, but I am making it a point every paycheck to send some money to the Institute for Justice (www.ij.org) – It’s an incredible way to stem the tide of absurd and arbitrary government regulation from local to federal in scope.

    Hey Chris,
I wasn’t able to see the video before they took it off of Facebook! Dang. If you run across another link to it, I’d love to see it.
    Thanks for all you do!
