IMG_4390I like lists. In my journal are several pages for listing things such as trips I've taken, books I've read, and quotes I like. One such list contains an eclectic collection entitled "Life Lessons." This consists of things I've learned through experience that could possibly have saved me from the experience in the first place! Occasionally, I'll dust off this list and read through it, finding that these lessons learned often need to be re-learned. At any rate, they keep me sharp and spur introspection. One that struck me this morning is:

"The time is going to pass and be gone. You can't do it all. Sooner or later you have to figure out what you can't imagine not accomplishing and give everything you've got toward doing it. Learn to say NO to everything else."

Good advice?

Achievable?

What do you think?

What are some of your life lessons?

Awesome advise. Achievable, yes! As long as we set our minds to do what we can and not worry about what we can not. Focus on what matters most! Many books are coming to mind with this topic…Eat that Frog, The ant and the Elephant, Resolved…so many….

This is a great reminder because I for one am guilty of falling into the “jack of all trades, master of none” mode if I’m not careful. It’s good to find our purpose and to focus there. In this way, we glorify God as we do it unto Him~Col 3:23. One lesson I have learned, in a life changing way, is that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow! Therefore, I need to make the most of every day, be thankful for it, and not worry beyond that day because when Christ is my anchor everything will be alright! It’s easier said than done tho, so thanks for the reminder:D God Bless!

Chris, that advice is just what I needed to hear today. Thank you. I think learning to say NO to everything else might be the hardest part because everything else includes some great things. But “you can’t do it all.” You’re awesome. Thank you.

Well, there does come a time when we accept that we can not do it all but we can do all that we can imagine.
    You do…

Great advice. I think, to the degree that it is God’s will for you to achieve anything, that it is absolutely possible, and if it is your purpose, even probable. So many good quotes come to mind to represent the lessons, best of which, on my mind now, is “Do the thing, and you will have the power.” Thanks Chris, awesome blog man.
    God Bless.

I’ve been really working on this recently. I’ve never had to really focus on anything long-term before this business, but I found true that anything good can distract us from great. Family time is a good thing and being a sanguine I love to be in the action of laughter and cheer but as good as all that may be it has been my biggest crutch. I’ve discovered that I have to get good at explaining to family that “I can’t right now” so that I can do the work to accomplish the great. I am going to add this quote along with my affirmations and read it daily. What a great reminder! Thanks Chris.

Life is short, eat desert first.
Though not a good diet plan, our feast on earth will soon end, and how many of us never get to what we really want: the deserts of life.
Our to do list should include desert. Let us eat the complete meal that God puts before us.

Great advice! Of course, “Sharpening the Saw” principle applies here in that I must have balance in my approach to avoid burn-out and to be rejuvenated and refreshed.
I just finished the Slight Edge by Jeff Olson and was thinking of the recognition and celebration steps to achieving our goals. Rome wasn’t built in a day an neither are my achievements. The key for me is doing something everyday that keeps me moving towards my life achievements.
Thanks Chris for being a great model for me and my family. In my eyes, you are the epitome of one whose living on purpose, Liber as Oliver DeMille would say, a true statesman for our day.
Here’s to the future starting TODAY!

I like the idea of keeping track of things that happen, lessons learned and books read. I’ve been listening alot to the Ant and the Elephant cd, and recently started taking my Top 100 list and writing out in detail what they all look, feel, smell, taste, and sound like. It’s very helpful to keep myself on track emotionally to my purpose. Before, I tended to volunteer for everything and not do much of anything. Go Team!

    Chris,
Great post. Here are a few of mine:
Stop and smell the roses. Don’t be in such a rush to get to tomorrow that you miss out on today.
Count your blessings. Live each moment fully and be always alive.
Take what you do seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously.
Trust God. Trust God’s love for you. God loves you and He wants the best for you.
Laugh at life’s absurdities. Find humor in everything, even tough stuff.
Turn it around. Re-frame it. (The one I’m working on now.)

That’s a good lesson. Laurie and I were just taught that lesson by the Lord in the past few months. We were tied up in many “good” things, distracting us from “great” things. A few things happened and the Lord virtually shut all those “good” doors. We both talked about it for a while, and chuckled at the Lord’s leading because it was obvious. We thanked him for His leading and look forward.

Here are a couple other lessons I’ve learned:
If your pregnant wife wants the AC on and the windows open in the winter, shut up and put on a sweatshirt.
If you only have 30 minutes to spare in an evening and the kitchen is on fire, don’t worry about that….play with your girls. (hyperbole of course)

Wow! That one smacked me today. Too often we find ourselves doing many good things when we need to be focused on the one or two great things that we were created.
