Dialing-for-danger-Do-cell-phones-increase-cancer-riskHave you ever wondered if cell phones pose health risks?

Do you know that researchers say children absorb twice the amount of radiation as do adults?

With the recent theme of this blog of refusing to take things at face value and learning to see our world around us with wide open eyes and discerning thoughts, the article below from Huffington Post caught my eye. It's a quick, thought-provoking read about a technology that has crept largely unexamined into our daily living. And with the trend of parents buying their children cellular phones at earlier and earlier ages, it might be worth considering.

Here's a portion of the article:

—————————————

Cell Phone Study 'Misleading': Children May Still be At Increased Cancer Risk, Experts Say

"Cell Phones Don’t Increase Cancer Risk in Kids." From USA Today to CBS News, variations of this hopeful-sounding headline now abound after yesterday's release of a new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

But experts have some serious concerns regarding the methods and conclusions of the first study evaluating the connection between cell phone radiation and brain cancer in children and teens. Not only was the study flawed, they note, but it was also financially supported by the cell phone industry.

"To have moms assume that kids using cell phones are safe is the wrong conclusion to make," Devra Davis, president and founder of the consumer advocacy group Environmental Health Trust, told The Huffington Post.

After looking at brain tumors and cell phone use among about 1,000 boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 19, European researchers determined that kids who averaged one or more weekly cell phone calls over a period of at least six months were not at an increased risk of developing a brain tumor compared to peers that were non-users. Overall, less than 15 percent of the children and teens had spent more than 4 years as a cell phone user.

"It’s ridiculous to think that because you didn’t find a significant increase in brain cancer among kids that now cell phones are safe," added Davis. She likened the study to looking at 16-year-olds who smoked as children to see if they had lung cancer. “You’d find nothing,” she said.

Dr. Keith Black, a brain tumor expert at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, agreed. "It usually takes decades of exposure for a person to be at an increased cancer risk," he told The Huffington Post, adding that the extent of the exposure observed in the study was extremely small.

"It's interesting that most of the studies that have shown a correlation between brain cancer and cell phone use have tended to look at long-term exposure — at least 10 years — and at higher doses such as using a cell phone for 60 minutes or more each day," said Dr. Black. "Studies that have tended to not find a link looked at short-term use — maybe an hour or so a month."

Unlike ionizing radiation such as X-rays or gamma rays, which are strong enough to damage the DNA in cells, far less is known about the cancer-causing potential of radiofrequency waves emitted by cell phones. What's more, most of the studies thus far have only looked at adults. Adults, however, absorb about half as much radiation while using one of the devices compared to children.

The latest addition to the conflicting assortment of studies was partially supported by money from mobile communication companies. However, senior author Martin Roosli of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel, Switzerland, told HuffPost that the industry "did not have any say" in how the study was conducted. The author of an accompanying editorial that affirmed the finding is employed at the International Epidemiology Institute, which has reportedly received funding from the telecommunications industry.

Published yesterday, the study also comes on the heels of Tuesday's unanimous ruling in San Francisco that will soon require all local cellular retailers to post radiation exposure warnings on every phone and hand every customer education material. The city's mayor is expected to sign the ruling into law within the next week, with more cities likely to follow San Francisco's lead, according to Ellen Marks, director of government and public affairs for Environmental Health Trust. Berkeley, Philadelphia and New York City are among those looking to impose similar legislation.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, Marks suggested that cities had been waiting to see how San Francisco fared. Their legislation had been previously tabled after a lawsuit from the cell phone industry, which claimed that the measure violated their first amendment rights.

Such a warning is not unprecedented. In fact, the Federal Communications Commission already requires a safe distance warning with every cell phone. (For example, a Blackberry is not to be held closer than an inch from the body.)

What do you think?

Are cell phones the new cigarettes?

SmokeDo you think we'll be reading about their medically confirmed damaging affects to our health someday, seeing huge lawsuits on television about corporate coverups and burried medical studies, or is it all a bunch of hype?

Were you shocked to read that part about keeping Blackberrys at least an inch away from the body?

How many hours a day do you hold a device up to your head?

Thanks for reading (and, if you're reading this on your cell phone, you might want to hold it at a safe distance from your face!)

Sincerely,

Chris Brady

    Chris,
Interesting how you just wrote this article. I was picking up a friend last night from the Apple store and there had to be 50% of the store filled with kids under 15 years old (seems about right – half the people were parents with their kids). One of the girls I noticed had to be around 9 years old complaining about how her dad couldn’t afford to upgrade her to the new iPhone 4! It was a clear indicator of multiple issues but reading this article made me think even deeper about the ramifications of child cell phone ‘addiction.’ These kids aren’t on it for one day a week (as stated in one of the studies) they are on it multiple hours a day. There has to be something to this issue if so many studies are being done and concerns continue to rise. Thanks for bringing the issue to the forefront!

Interesting article. I had heard that cell phones may cause cancer several years ago before I had children, but I had not thought or heard anything about it since. However, my husband and I decided some time ago that our kids would not be allowed to have their own phones until they were around 14 or 15, possibly even waiting until they could pay for their own phone. This article may help us stick to our guns. However, the kids do still use our cell phones about once a week to talk to Grandma or Grandpa. Makes me wonder if the land line will be making a come back…..

Interesting article Chris! Thanks for opening our eyes on this subject. I did not know of the current warning from Blackberry, yikes! Like Tessa, our children do not and will not have their own phone until at least 14 – 15 yrs old, tho they borrow ours from time to time. What’s interesting is that they don’t crave it like most of their peers.

Given that I am part of a research organization, I read “studies” all of the time that are poorly conducted, have hidden agendas and are laughed out of the scientific community. The study regarding brain cancer and children referenced above is not the final word nor did the investigator intend for it to be.
Over the next 25 years, we will know without a doubt the long term implications of cell phone use for adults and children alike. The preliminary studies are scary! Mind you, they are still preliminary, but then so were the studies about cigarettes, birth control pills, and nitrates in the 60’s. Hang on folks! The cell phone “road” is about to get bumpy over the next 25 years!
Reading scientific studies requires a great deal of scientific understanding as well as research knowledge. If our only source of scientific results is the media, we are at the mercy of those with a hidden agenda. Be suspicious of every scientific headline!

    Hi Chris,
I don’t know about cell phones, but I do know that if every book was like your Italy book or Oliver Demilles 1913 book, we would all be voracious readers. What an eye opener to what we are doing and what we should be doing.

My brother in law gets almost hysterical on cell phone use for adults, too. And if he sees either Bob or I using our blue-tooths (blue-teeth??), he is beside himself! He is convinced the radio waves from them are rotting our brains.
I will agree, kids should be limited on cell phone time. But not necessarily because of health risks. It’s because of the distraction factors, learning delayed gratification and other equally important reasons.
It just makes no sense for young children to have them. Our kids didn’t get theirs until they could pay for them, and the contracts that came with them, themselves . . . And by that time, their brain cells were mature enough to handle any radiation from them, just like any adult’s.
As far as the addiction factor, with cell phones being the new cigarette, well, that almost goes without saying!! Just walk through any mall, workplace or any place people congregate, and everyone has one . . .

Thank you Chris! I am director of the California brain tumor assoc. This is an area of extreme concern. Check out what is going on in San Francisco with this. We worked on their cell phone roght to know law since 2009. Ndustry is suing saying it violates their first amendment rights! We were in federal court yesterday! have also testified to congress and briefed GAO on their recent report.
The phones are being tested away from the head or body, not as used. Check out the hidden safe distance warnings in every manual. Children are at great risk and we will not see the ramifications for years. Feel free to contact me for more info at cabtasf@hotmail.com. Thanks again.

    Hello –
A general comment — am wondering how many of the “experts” have the requisite 10,000 hours of PDCA’ed experience/practice? ( Gladwell/Colvin )
Regardless of the answer, very interesting post!

I find it quite interesting that the study was flawed and funded by the telecommunications industry… HMMM… Kind of ironic that they also “did not have any say” as to how the study was conducted. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but have the morals of some business industries gone to the wayside? Is the income from said industies more important than the lives of the people supporting those industries? We need change in this country and I believe that begins with a self-directed education. Like the self-directed education someone can begin to pursue through the LIFE Business.

It’s funny how study sponsor bias only works when it’s the industry sponsoring something, but not when it’s the would be nanny-state regulators.
Cancer from radio waves? Do you realize how little energy is in radio waves? It’s the cell towers where you’re getting the large energy flux, not the dinky transmitters in your hands. The scientific illiteracy is breathtaking.
Think about this: If you have eight hours of talk time on your cell phone, and the battery is only so big, just how much power is going out of the phone? Right, almost nothing.
If radio waves caused cancer, then everyone near transmission towers of all kinds would have mutated to swamp monsters by now.
Having said this, I do have true compassion for all cancer victims (Both parents in this case). With all of the various triggers in the environment, I believe trying to ascribe any particular cancer to cell phones is a snipe hunt.

The reason that honest studies on info like this will remain very unlikely is that we have come to put our full trust in government regulatory agencies that are easily corrupted by big corporate money. If we could get rid of these unconstitutional govt. Monopolies, the market would demand honest, 3rd party credibility companies that would serve the market rather than big corps.

I forgot my phone at home yesterday, and by day’s end felt strangely ‘free’. Perhaps this is more motivation to just leave it behind more often (despite what the ‘experts’ say).

You know what? I don’t believe in it. No, I know that cell phones are bad for one’s health, but if we try to save our children from absolutely EVERY bad thing in the world, it will be easier to just put them into a vacuum box with the perfect artificial environment. This is just impossible!
