Image 7In life, in business, or wherever, it is necessary to find sources of motivation to help maintain peak performance. My business partner and often co-author Orrin Woodward once said, “If you don’t want to do something, no one can stop you!” Inertia is often hard to overcome, so we look for sources to get us moving. Motivation is the force we use to overcome our general desire to lay on the couch and have someone fan us and feed us grapes.

There are motivational speakers, motivational seminars, and reams of motivational books. Much of the information found in these sources is valuable and at least temporarily able to kick us in the fanny. Sometimes, though, these things can miss the mark. There are times when things that sound true on the surface fall apart upon further inspection.

One time I was at a business conference listening to a speaker on stage who had been a famous NFL football player. His talk wasn’t really a talk, it was more like a well-rehearsed theatrical performance. Every line was memorized; every word delivered with just a little too much polish. It was obvious he’d given this exact talk a hundred times. Still, it was pretty good. But then he said something that left me wondering. “The key to success,” he shouted with a pause for dramatic effect, “is to fall down ninety-nine times, and get up a hundred!” The crowd went wild. Children cried. Heart patients clutched their chests. Such beautiful words. Such wisdom. Such motivation.

Such bad math!

I chuckled to myself as I imagined how it was possible for someone to “get up” one more time than they’d fallen down!

There is another such phrase so common that nearly every one of us has said it at one time or another. It is in books. It can be heard in speeches. It has been said by well-intentioned advice givers everywhere. The phrase?

“It’s never too late!”

But there is one certainty as reliable as taxes: there IS a time when it’s too late. When you’re dead, it’s too late! Or when you’ve blown the important relationships in your life, it is probably too late. Or when you have destroyed your health, it’s too late! There IS a too late!

Now, I understand, the phrase is meant to encourage people that even though they’ve wasted time, or even though they’ve failed in the past, or even though opportunities have passed by – that’s no excuse for not taking the next positive step. Still, good intentions aside, the phrase is not true. One of the reasons so many people accomplish so little in life is they live as though they’ve got forever; they live as though it’s never too late.

There are many other “motivational myths” out there. Can you think of some? If so, share them with the readers of this blog in the comment section. We need to be a little aware of the “truths” we are swallowing without critical consideration. Success in life, in relationships, in finances, in anything, requires action consistent with true principles. Learn the principles and steer clear of the myths.

Motivate yourself to get cranking now, because although there is a day when it will be too late, it might not be yet! And, if you should get knocked down, feel free to get up once for each time it happens. That should be sufficient.

Sincerely,

Chris Brady

    Chris,
I tried to use that “fall down 99 times & get up 100” bad math example on a local paper’s website for one of their blogs one time. The blogger and most of the readers were just as bad at math as your speaker! (Truth be told, so was I, until I heard you explain it!)
I heard a top leadership expert say we should work on our strengths and ignore our weaknesses. He had a convincing arguement for it. Then I heard folks like you saying we needed to work on our weaknesses, and become strong in them. As I thought about it, I realized I had been using his premise as a cop-out for not growing in areas in which I was not comfortable, in which I did not already excel. Because while I will never overcome weaknesses that might stop me from becoming (to my situation) something absurd like an Olympian, he never made the distinction between the cultivation of talents (to my mind, an appropriate application of his premise) and our personal growth as people (an inappropriate application).

Great thoughts Chris. None of us knows the amount of time we have left to impact the people around us, with God’s help, so we better get busy.
Thanks for the challenge to live life with a greater sense of urgency. People will either benefit or suffer because of who we are as leaders so it behooves us to be growing in knowledge and active in it’s implementation. As Laurie Woodward said, “read, listen, associate and implement.”

    Here is one more
“It is what it is” Seamed to cover a lot of problems.
Now, because of LIFE / TEAM, blogs such as yours and the other PC’s , and other people I now associate with, when I hear there phrase “it is what it is”, it tells me that others are to willing to give up when things get a little difficult. Others are willing to accept what things are.
Thanks for your part in dragging me out of that way of thinking!

“Put God in the drivers seat of your life”. I understand the meaning is to recognize God’s sovereignty and our submission to Christ. But let’s put that scenario into practical use, for example when literally driving our car. If we LITERALLY “let go and let God”, we might let go and see God very very soon as we go crash! As goes many undirected lives. Faith is displayed in deliberate actions. Lack of intentionality and responsibility often results from this misleading but well intentioned phrase…at least in my humble observation. What do you think?

I’ve heard it said that the only time you really fail is when you quit. I think your suggestion (to paraphrase) that it is “sufficient to get-up each time you fail down” is great advice. What a great example it is for a family/friends to see us have tenacity to work on our weaknesses and face life with courage when it gets hard. Thank you. People do certainly teach that making excuses is acceptable. Taking the easy way out usually has negatively consequences.

In response to, “Truth is sweet to the ears, cant say every time i have heard something true i was really over joyed with it. Especially when facing brutal reality,” it made me think about the law of gravity.
It is great to know a true governing principle that keeps us grounded on the earth. It’s when we try to defy it that we get hurt.
I’m trying to figure out how to apply it to exhilarating things like sky diving. Maybe since you still abide by and respect it, you can enjoy it to greater heights. You rely on it, actually.
Now to figure out the correlation of tripping over my own feet…

Chris. I think one of the greatest myths, or tragedies actually, is that we think we can put God off till later. Not true. When He clearly calls us to Himself we need to answer immediately. II Cor. 6:2 tell us that now is the time, now is the day of salvation. Gen. 6:3 tells us that the Spirit of God shall not always strive with man. So, when that opportunity comes, and you are face to face with God, answer the call. Now is the time… we are not guaranteed later. Great motivational thought Chris. Love your Blog.

Wise guidance from a man with his Mastery. I agree all to often in the World of Advice it’s all Cliché. “Work Hard” “Do your Best” “Nose to Grindstone” “Nothings Easy” ” You got to have money to make money” As I have been with Team and Life for a year….These are now starting to make sense in proportion to my thinking. Anyone of these common sayings are Great accompanied by specifics…same as edifying our friends…Ask the question? What is your passion or purpose to “work hard”? Be Specific. …Let the vision of your Dream or Dread fuel the work, to have the vision of what your working for. Last year I would be standing there agreeing and spouting cliche’s myself. Thank You for allowing me to be a part of something much greater than myself with LIFE and Team!!

I don’t know about other myths but the ‘There is a Too Late’ reminds me of the story Orrin told about the demons and the devil sending not the one that said there is no Hell, nor the one that said there is no Heaven, but the one that said there is no hurry.

Here goes: “Inch by inch it’s a cinch”
Now I don’t know about you, but I have in most cases found that even progressing an inch can be difficult. I many times have gone an inch forward only to go several inches in reverse.

Well, being involved in Muay Thai for many years now I can relate to the “too late”, I definitely won’t be a competitive fighter in Thailand at age 65 lol, it will get too late and that should be motivation enough for people, and “folks” haha, I think one myth is that “it will get easier the harder you work” and of course somethings will but the reason guys that race the National Enduro Series (a dream of mine) don’t win every year after they’ve won the previous is because success is always tough no matter what, and if things seem to get easy, then done with that level and time to step up to the next level and get to work, You’re an amazing leader Chris! thanks for the right! info

‎”Never teach a child to be a falcon, for one day you may be the prey.”
Falcons are raptors, aka birds of prey. They do not canabilize their parents (or other falcons) and leave the carcass-picking to vultures. Whoever said it obviously knew nothing about raptors . . .
