Following is a list of some of the books that have had the biggest impact upon my thinking regarding business.  I have had countless hours of discussion and reflection on these books with Orrin Woodward, Tim Marks, and others.  I hope these books will spark as much interest and discussion for you and your friends as they did for me and mine.  Here they are (in no particular order):

1. E Myth, Michael E. Gerber

2. The World is Flat, Thomas L. Friedman

3. Good to Great, Jim Collins

4. The Wal-Mart Effect, Charles Fishman

5. McDonald’s: Behind the Arches, John F. Love

6. it’s not the BIG that eat the SMALL . . . it’s the FAST that eat the SLOW, Jennings and Haughton

7. The Change Makers, Maury Klein

8. NUTS!, Freiberg and Freiberg

9. New Rules for the New Economy, Kevin Kelly

10. Driving Digital, McDowell and Simon

I’ve read six of those, but I gotta say, “it’s the fast that eat the slow” was my favorite of the bunch. Everyone in the retail world is afraid of Wal-mart because they are so big. Simply put, if you are swimming in the ocean and see the super large tankers and some guy in a speed boat, and they both want to run you over, which are you going to be more afraid of? If the tanker misses you, it will take him something like 10 miles to turn around for the next pass. Large corporations that do billions in sales every year can’t turn on a dime. That is the beauty of Team. If we wanted to change the name to “Crazy Guys in Suits”, the whole objective could be finished by the end of next week. If a big company wanted to change their name to something crazy like that, it would take at least 18 months, maybe 24. The others I read are great too, and I plan on picking up the other four. Thanks Chris.

The E-Myth is next on my list of now 35-40 books to read. I’m finishing the new Launching a Leadership Revolution right now! Thanks for posting these Chris! I’ve heard of a lot of these, but not all of them. I’m excited to add these to my library, and better yet, get the information from them into my head!

    Chris,
So many books, so little time. I am ashamed to say that I haven’t read any of these books yet, but they virtually all are on my to read list. I just finished An Enemy Called Average and now am reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (WOW, what a POWERFUL book that is) and next on my list are Developing the Leaders Around You and Love and Respect. By the time I finish them I will have several more waiting to be read, I’m sure.

    Dave C:
You are exactly right: there just isn’t enough time to read all the good books we might wish! Therefore it is imperative that we choose wisely those in which we will invest our time reading. It all goes back to the concept of selecting the right information, and selecting carefully!
    Enjoy your journey!

    John:
Yes. The World is Flat made the list for two reasons: 1) it is a great book for getting one to consider the entire globe as the economic community for which it has become, and 2) because almost everything else Friedman writes is incorrect! This book is therefore a great conversation and thought starter.
